The biggest issue most people have with a Walt Disney World holiday is how to manage the large crowds, particularly if you are planning a trip during a busy period (Summer or Christmas, for example). Many people who are fortunate enough to choose when they want to travel often avoid these “peak” times for quieter times of the year. While there are certainly benefits to be had by choosing to travel to Disney during low season, there are also a number of drawbacks. As with any Walt Disney World holiday, it is worthwhile to weigh up both options to figure out if travelling during low season will work for you.
The Pros – Lighter Crowds & more Bearable Weather
The biggest draw for booking a Disney Holiday for low season is the lighter crowds in the theme parks; and its a pretty big benefit! Lighter crowds mean shorter queues for attractions, less chance of waiting hours in line for your lunch and completely erases the chance of the Theme Parks hitting capacity (meaning you won’t get in at all!). For many, travelling low season to avoid the heavy crowds makes a Walt Disney World holiday a lot more bearable
Travelling low season will also allow you to miss the extreme heat of a Floridian summer. While there are those out there who don’t mind soaring temperatures, afternoon thunderstorms and 100% humidity, for many these conditions can take away from the enjoyment of the Theme Parks. Having the ability to travel during low season allows many to pick a time of year with weather conditions to suit them. Not only will temperatures be more bearable, you can also choose Florida’s “dry” months if you want to try and avoid the rain all together as well.
Many people find travelling to Walt Disney World during low season can truly make their holiday more enjoyable, and this is particularly true of those with younger children or have more elderly members in their travel party; the lighter crowds and cooler weather make the long days in the parks much more bearable.
The Cons – Ride Refurbishments & Shorter Park Hours
Whilst travelling to Walt Disney World during low season seems like the perfect way to do Disney, there are also a number of drawbacks to choosing to visit during the quieter months of the year. One of the biggest issues to consider when planning a trip during low season is the possibility of Ride Refurbishments. Walt Disney World tend to do most of the maintenance, refurbishments and attraction closures during low season (to ensure theres less issues and closures during peak times), which means you could book a trip to find your favourite ride/show/area closed for the duration of your visit. To avoid disappointment, it is always worth keeping this in mind when booking a trip which falls during off-peak times
Similar to attraction closures, low season also sees shorter park hours than what you may encounter during busier periods. Whilst this is a blessing for some, reduced theme park hours means less time in the parks to get around all the attractions. If you’ve been to Disney before and are accustomed to the Theme Parks being open until midnight, having Magic Kingdom close at 9pm or 10pm may take some getting used to! Quieter times of the year will also see a reduction in the amount of Extra Magic Hours offered, which can be a factor in how much value you are getting out of choosing a Walt Disney World Hotel.
While many factors will play a part in deciding what time of year works best for your Walt Disney World holiday, it is important to remember that each season will bring its own set of positives and negatives. Ultimately, there is no “perfect” time of year to visit, all you can do is weigh up the pros and cons and choose a time which works best for you and your party. And remember that even if you’re committed to certain dates for your trips (School Holidays for example), there are still ways to avoid or manage the crowds. Similarly, if you have chosen to travel at a busy time of year, please don’t let the excess crowds dread your holiday. Sometimes, the hustle and bustle helps to make the experience if you plan well and manage your time!
